Ford Authority article by Aaron Birch: WyoTech's retro-fabulous Ford Transit concept: SEMA 2016

Leave it to a school system specializing in automotive-related education to come up with one of the coolest custom Ford Transit vans the world has ever seen.

WyoTech, formerly the Wyoming Technical Institute, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To celebrate in style, the organization came up with this funky, fresh Ford Transit concept for the annual SEMA Show currently taking place in Las Vegas. Based on a 2016 Ford Transit 150 with a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, this custom-built van is a picture-perfect tribute to the 1970s.

WyoTech’s Ford Transit 150 accomplishes its unique aesthetic with help from a custom grille, rear-window louvers, and bubble window, not to mention a distinctive, vintage-looking paint scheme with PPG custom hues. That said, the van certainly isn’t equipped like something out of the 1970s; the cockpit boasts a contemporary Kenwood audio system with Rockford Fosgate speakers and amps, 20-inch flip-down center monitors from Samsung, and custom WyoTech appointments with Katzkin leather seating. HushMat soundproofing ought to keep the interior nice and quiet, while XK-GLOW lighting provides illumination.

Mechanically, the Ford Transit’s factory 3.5-liter EcoBoost has been left virtually untouched, save for a new tune via an SCT XR 4 Performance programmer. A Gibson Performance Exhaust system with custom-fabricated side pipes helps the engine breathe, and looks mighty darn cool doing it. A Roush Performance front splitter and fog lights, plus 18-inch Rocket Racing Booster wheels (wearing Micheling Redline rubber) help to complete the van’s retro-awesome style.

WyoTech’s funky 2016 Ford Transit 150 concept is on display now at the 2016 SEMA Show. Today is the final day of the show, so if you have the inclination to see it in person – and really, how could you not? – it’s likely your last chance to do so.
