Albuquerque Academy and Albuquerque Institute of Math and Science Host Margaret H. Marshall, Chief Justice, Massachusetts

May 08, 2018

In October, Albuquerque Academy will host Margaret H. Marshall, former Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the first woman to hold that position. Chief Justice Marshall will be the inaugural guest for an annual presentation at Albuquerque Academy about the importance of understanding the history of the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution itself, and the obligations of being an American citizen. She will meet with students both at the Albuquerque Academy and the AIMS Charter School.

The lecture, established by Albuquerque Lawyer Roberta Cooper Ramo, will be funded by a gift in honor of Ramo from the ECMC Group, a family of companies that provide financial tools and services, nonprofit career education, and job placement services to help students succeed and achieve their academic and professional goals.

The event will be hosted by Albuquerque Academy, which will partner with a local public school each year. This fall, the partner school will be the Albuquerque Institute of Math and Science (AIMS). Students from both schools will have the opportunity to meet with Justice Marshall and gain insight from her knowledge and experience. Albuquerque Academy will also host a Community Academy event featuring Justice Marshall. This event, open to the public, will be held Tuesday, October 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Chief Justice Marshall began her career in private practice in Boston. She served as President of the Boston Bar Association—the oldest bar association in the United States. In 1992, she was appointed Vice President and General Counsel of Harvard University. In 1996, she was appointed as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, and became Chief Justice in September 1999. Chief Justice Marshall was the second woman to serve on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the oldest appellate court in the Western Hemisphere, and the first to serve as Chief Justice in its more than 300-year history.

During her tenure, Chief Justice Marshall wrote several ground breaking decisions including Goodridge v. Department of Public Health holding that the Massachusetts constitution does not permit the state to deny citizens the right to same-sex marriage. Chief Justice Marshall retired from the court in December 2010. Chief Justice Marshall was the first woman to serve as the Senior Trustee of the Yale Board of Trustees, the governing body of Yale University. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Law Institute.
